Sonar: Everyman’s Sailboat
Created as a club racing boat designed to be accessible for all skill levels, the Sonar sailboat is comfortable to sit in all day and is safe and easy to control for new sailors and older sailors alike. It’s also exciting to race.
Disabled sailors adopted the Sonar as a class for Paralympic competition because it can accommodate crew with a variety of disabilities and provides safe, but thrilling racing. The boat is sailed with a crew of three, who together need to have a minimum combined level of disability to be able to compete in Paralympic competition.
Crews adapt their boat’s mechanisms to accommodate their specific disabilities. They sail with just a mainsail and jib, though Sonars can also be sailed with the added spinnaker.
