470: The Athlete-Nerds
The 470 is regarded as the most technical class of high performance sailing. Sailors in this class must study their equipment and develop a setup perfectly paired with their style of sailing.
Two sailors race this boat: The skipper controls the boat’s rudder and mainsail angles and ultimately makes many of the team’s tactical decisions. The crew’s job is much more mechanical, managing the front two sails called the jib and the spinnaker, and using her body weight either inside the boat or suspended out over the rail by a wire known as a trapeze, to enhance the boat’s performance.
During races, the skipper balances racing tactics with making small adjustments to the boat’s equipment based on wind and water conditions. Races see boats sailing close together with just small differences in speed, but those micro differences in boat tuning and boat handling can be the deciding factor between first place and last.
